What We Believe
Above all else, those gathered at First Baptist Church of Bostonia are Christians – followers of Jesus Christ. We walk in the footsteps of the women who bore witness to the empty tomb; of the amazed, bewildered fishermen who abandoned their nets when called by Jesus; of Paul, Barnabas, Dorcas, and so many others recorded in the Words of Scripture. We take up our cross daily and follow Jesus.
We hold in common with our fellow Christians the ancient words expressed in the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy universal church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
We are a covenanting church of the American Baptist Churches USA. To quote that body: “American Baptists share a tradition that has emphasized the Lordship and atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, believers' baptism, the competency of all believers to be in direct relationship with God, the importance of the local church, freedom in worship and opinion, and the call to bear witness in the world.” For more information, please visit What We Believe - American Baptist Churches USA
Built into our collective theological approach as American Baptists is a strong focus on the priesthood of all believers, including the importance for individuals to humbly and prayerfully read scripture and grapple with what we believe, and an understanding of the congregation as a crucial locus of Christian life. We thus possess a roadmap that allows us to differ on points of secondary importance while worshipping, serving, and reaching out with the Good News in unity. We invite you to share the walk of Christian faith with us!
